Question by s_kroy: How to proceed in remaking a multicolor graphic in photoshop?
I have a map which has become dirty looking. I want to make the map again using the old one as background. The map is multicolor having different color thrown in here and there. How to copy ditto in photoshop? Suppose in first layer I use the base color as opaque red which will not allow to see the background layer. Can I put my successive layers behind background layer? Please give me guidance.

Scan or photograph your original, save a copy, insert new layer above the background, fill in your base colour and hide it (by clicking on the eye icon next to the layer) or change the opacity, create a new layer add your secondary colours and so on, finishing with the outlines and text layers.
When you have finished make sure you unhide or put to 100% opacity all the layers you have hidden.
